You might have heard about the famous Langkawi Island but not Tuba Island. Some say that Tuba Island is how Langkawi looked like 20 years ago. It is an high tourism potential and strikingly beautiful Island located 15minutes/5km boat ride away from Kuah, Langkawi.
Tuba Island is named after the Tuba Tree (also known as the tree from heaven). The tuba leaves was used as organic pesticide to control pests or used as toxicant to stunned or killed fish. However, now there is only one Tuba Tree left on the island.
There are approximately 5000 residents. Local villagers mostly are fishermen or farmers and they live a very simple life. Recently, Fisheries Development Authority and Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia developed the homestay program that offers tourist to experience authentic traditional Malay village life in Tuba Island, but the underdeveloped tourism facilities, lack of tourism business skills and poor resources management among the villagers have hindered the growth of community based tourism in the island.
Community Based Tourism (CBT) is a new form of tourism product in which tourism is managed by the local communities. Apart from improving the life standard of local communities, the main agenda of CBT is to preserve the socio-cultural status and the environment of the local communities.

6. To improve the tourism facilities of Tuba Island
• Poor tourism facilities (e.g No fixed ferry schedule, no tourists brochure/map/signage available and tourist information center does not operate on daily basis)
• Poor hospitality management skills (e.g. Home cleanliness standard)
• Poor tourism business and marketing skills (e.g Locals don’t know how to attract tourists)
1. New welcome board will be placed at the jetty.
2. New signages will be placed at attractions, activities location and as well as along the hiking trail.
3. New travel map with the roads and directions in Tuba Island, as well as location of attractions and activities.
4. New travel brochure with the details for each attraction and activities, the must-eat, must-see and must-do in Tuba Island.
5. First visitation will have three (3) class representatives to visit the island, interact with locals and identify the issues. (Cover: Homestay, transportation and meals)
6. Second visitation will involve 14 people including the project advisor to implement the project on the island. (Cover: Homestay, transportation and meals)
Over the years, popularity and rapid development of Langkawi make Tuba Island less visited and known by tourists despite the natural beauty the island is blessed with. It is a hidden gem of Malaysia which has so much to offer. The authentic Malay kampung homestay experience, untouched pristine beaches, breathtaking rural setting are what define Tuba Island. We would like to introduce this piece of land to the public, as well as preserve the culture and environment of Tuba Island. However, our ideas to improve the island’s tourism sector are restricted by limited budget. We hope your generosity will help us achieve the objectives so that more people would know about this beautiful island.

(Pulau Tuba)
