In end April 2014, we gathered a group of artists to celebrate World Tapir Day (in which the main day falls on 27 April yearly) in Performing Arts Centre of Penang through the use of arts.
The event is not only to provide a platform for local artists to express their creativity, but more importantly to raise awareness of a vulnerable local animal: Malayan Tapir.
Through arts, we believe we can help locals especially young generations to get to know more about Malayan Tapir, by using adorable handicrafts, children’s theatre, storytelling and workshops, paintings and so on.
This year, we want to be financially able to invite more artists to join us, put up more fruitful workshops and storytelling sessions to benefit more children. We want all artists to be able to contribute their creative products with a promising sales in return hence we are crowd-funding to help them make the festival work.
Most artists were coming in to showcase their work without a pay last year. We'd like to secure some allowance for their hardwork also through crowd-funding, we want to reward donors coupons to purchase their products like: t-shirts, mugs, keychains, stationery, postcards, etc.
Apart from merchandise items, we also are planning to help younger generation understand more about Malayan Tapir via interesting and interactive workshops and storytelling sessions.
About Us:
Performing Arts Centre of Penang (penangpac) was established by The Actors Studio and Eastern & Oriental Berhad together back in 2011, and we are the first arts centre in the northern region. We provide not only a venue to host local and international shows like musicals, dances and plays, we also offer classes for children to learn about arts. We are a not-for-profit theatre, hence we rely very much on ticket sales, venue rentals, course fess and so on to sustain.
We believe education can always be presented from a different and artistic angle. Ideas come in different shapes and creativity is often awaken by the use of imagination, with ideas from various angles. Look around us, we live with colourful and physical objects in the nature that often, if we spend more time on understanding them, we can invent thousands of other things inspired by just the beings of them.
Malayan Tapir is an animal that many Malaysians especially the younger ones do not know anythign or much about. We want to help spreading words about it, not via books or classroom but performances and arts.
