"I'm not an activist. I don't fight for people on the street but I am a documentary filmmaker. I tell their stories through my lens."
My work related closely with people with diversified background. They could be activists, artists, performing arts practitioner, visual artists, sociologists, environmentalist and we are engaged with the community especially community who are at risk. We go on-ground, creating a safe space for discussions and allowing people from targeted community to elevate themselves and we take their stories to and share it with their communities to inspire others to step up and making a decision for themselves.
I believe most of the experience that I gained not just giving myself opportunities to have better understanding on the nature of my work, but also the communities that I am engaging with either in my residing countries or outside and intercultural relation plays the biggest part of it.
Although my pledge for this funding is on personal basis to attend a documentary masterclass in Serbia, I do believe that it is important for content creators to be exposed to different culture and perspective. It is matter to change the way people telling stories because as much as each stories unique, how the stories perceive to the audience is majorly depends on the storyteller.
In the industry with vast technology and media communication, it is important for a filmmaker to keep on learning and stepping up their game and at the same time contribute and giving back to society and community. Having an opportunity to travel and learn abroad will help the filmmakers to share not just their experience or authentic Instagram photos, but to help and assist especially new filmmakers thus creating a healthy ecosystem of the creative industry.
"Competiton makes us faster, but collaboration makes us better"
Besides making documentaries I was also exposing myself to international collaboration.
In 2016, I was invited to represent Malaysia to attend the Nobel Peace Ceremony in Norway with other 25 gamechanger from 13 Asian, Nordic and European countries and involved with an international exhibition project uder Telenor Youth Forum and Nobel Peace Centre regarding the mental health awareness. In this project, we worked closely with schools and NGO in Bangladesh.
In 2017, I was nominated by US Embassy in Malaysia to participate in a documentary workshop under Young South East Asean Leaders Initiatives with other 13 emerging documentary filmmakers in South East Asia. In this project, we did a documentary with Luang Prabang locals. The documentary was selected for a screening in this coming September 2018.
Below is the details of allocation of funds needed for my documentary masterclass.
Please help me to achieve my goal for my masterclass. Your support is much appreciated!
