The Problem
We firmly believe that having access to basic utilities such as electricity is essential as it affects every aspect of the human life. Having access to electricity equated to more time to study for children, more productive hours and opportunities for adults, as well as more fellowship among family members and friends. Yet, many people have to live their daily lives without electricity. How many? 1.06 billion worldwide do not have access to electricity and millions more whose supply is unreliable. Many of these people are either living in very remote locations which are underdeveloped or who are simply too poor to afford to pay the electricity bill. These are the hardcore poor. Some of them live their lives on less than US$1.90 a day. A lot of them turn to kerosene lamps as an alternative to lighting. These lamps are not only inefficient in the lighting that they provide, but they are also dangerous. Smoke emitted from these kerosene lamps causes respiratory problems and environmental pollution. Kerosene lamps are often the source of destructive accidental fires as well as burns and disfigurements. The cost of kerosene is also significant, consuming as much as one thirds of their family income. Children in poor families often have to stop studying so that they could work to help support the family. Currently there are 152 million children worldwide between 5 and 17 years of age who are victims of child labour with 73 million of them working in hazardous conditions. All these factors act as a poverty trap that is difficult to escape.
Who are we and what we do
We believe that access to electricity is a basic human right. We believe that has as fighting chance to lift themselves out of poverty through guidance, enrichment of skills, improved productivity, education, networking, cultivation of positive attitudes, and renewal of mindset. With this, Lights for Millions was formed to help others help themselves. We seek to empower these communities and encourage entrepreneurship through electrification. As such, our work is dedicated to funding and delivering solar powered lights to communities who have no access to electricity, and we strive to inspire and improve the lives of those who need assistance.
The Solar Powered Light Solution
These solar powered lights will help meet the basic need of electrification. It will provide lighting at night as well as handphone charging capabilities. Children can now study longer hours at night, adults can be more productive and even learn new skills, families and communities can come together and have fellowship even at night, and the health, safety, and cost concerns that come with the use of kerosene lamps can be reduced or eliminated.
Lights for Millions is not alone on this mission. We work with local onsite NGOs to identify communities who do not have access to the electrical grid. By working together, we believe we are able to provide a better solution. We want to change lives - one community at a time. You can help realize that vision.
About Kampung Chat
Kampung Chat is located in Pahang and consists of a cluster of 3 small communities, Kampung Chat 1(4 houses), Kampung Chat 2(3 houses), and Kampung Chat 3(7 houses), with a total of 14 houses.
These families are currently going through life without any electricity. They rely on kerosene lamps for lighting which can be a hazard. We believe that the solar powered lights will make a huge improvement in their lives, make for a safer environment, more productive nights, as well as savings from not consuming kerosene. LfM is out to make a difference in their lives and your donations help make that happen.
The following is the estimated budget expense for the project:
Solar powered lights (14 units) @ RM260 each – RM3640
Accommodations and meals for staff – RM525
Transport and delivery into village – RM905.40
Project management cost – RM563.40
Total cost – RM5633.80
LfM is appreciate of any support and donation offered, regardless of whether the donation amount is big or small. If LfM is able to raise more funds than the targeted goal for this project, the access funds would then be allocated to our next project.
Thank you for your kind attention and consideration. We hope that you will choose to be the light of hope and to make a difference in the lives of others.
Do feel free to contact us if you do have any questions or that you need further clarification.
