We are a group of six passionate film students from Multimedia University grouping together in their final year to work on a short film entitled ‘Kelinguh'.
KELINGUH - SHORT FILM
'Kelinguh' is an MMU Faculty of Cinematic Arts Final Year Project (Short Film) that combined live-action and animation, tells the story of a modern-day adaptation of a Kayan folklore about Sape', a traditional Borneo lute instrument said to have magical healing qualities.
Origin of the Story
According to legend, a farmer is desperate in search of a cure for his dying wife. In his dreams, he is visited by the spirits of his ancestors telling him his wife is trapped in the spirit realm. So he carves himself a boat to transport him to this realm and rescue his wife. This boat he crafted, in the end, became the sape'.
The film begins in a hospital room with a woman tending to his sickly husband. She leaves the room for a while to take a break from her husband, but when she returns, her husband has disappeared. She hears strange music echoing in the hallway. As she draws closer to the source, the world around her begins to bleed into the realm of the supernatural. As she treks deeper into the spirit realm, flashes of her past life with her husband plays in her mind, reminding of a life she shared with him. As she nears the edges of the realm, a great flood washes her away back into reality. She awakens to find her husband back in the real world. Her journey has helped her accept her husband's deteriorating condition, and to embrace the time they have left.
Director's Statement
“I was inspired by the relationship dynamic between my aunt and her husband who was dying of cancer. It is truly horrifying to go through any major sickness, but it also takes a toll on the caregiver and loved ones. The folklore gave an interesting juxtaposition to the reality of providing care and comfort to a dying loved one.”
- Jeremy Jecky
Where The Money Goes?
The funds we receive from this crowdfunding will be able to help us in covering the costs of:
1. Equipment rental
Most of the budget will go to renting Camera Accessories, Lighting and Grip. We will be needing extra equipment to be rented to be able to achieve the vision of the director and cinematographer.
2. Post-Production
We will be using original sape' music in the film, we will be featuring music from local sape' artists from Sarawak, Malaysia. Half of the shooting will take place in a green screen studio, and we will be hiring a Visual Effect Supervisor on set for guidance. The fund will also cover up the payment for Sound Mixing and Color Grading.
3. Logistics
We have several shooting locations including Hospital, Palm Oil Farm, Green Screen Studio and etc in 4 days of shooting. We will pay the fees and permits of the locations, foods and accommodations for crew and cast.
4. Art
This will cover the props for the film, in which we aim to look for traditional Borneo costumes and items. The budget will also go into building a set for a particular scene and to cover the cost of the makeup for the cast.
5. Cast
Funds will also cover up the payment of the actors for 4 shooting days.
6. Marketing
We are making this film with the aim that it would travel to national and international film festivals. The funds received will be used to enter these film festivals and for the film to be able to be screened.

Experienced in directing music videos, documentaries, and shorts form narratives.
Producer: Joeline Wong

A burning passion from an early age has fueled her into various projects, gaining experience with many great achievements in hand.
Scriptwriter: Danial Hakim
Danial is a screenwriter filmmaker interested in many different genres and film styles. Not favoring any specific one may be perceived as a downfall, but filmmaking is ultimately an endeavor for the greatest of empathizers. He is also interested in football, some video games and all of the people around him.
Cinematographer: Roheeth Jayakumar
Content creation passion. An Ambitious aspiring filmmaker inspired to create wonderful moments and feeling through visuals and rhythm. Roheeth aims to tell stories, highlighting journeys and capturing adventures around us through the inspiring results of film technology, and an ever-building passionate skillset. From editing to color grading, he believes that when visuals are stitched together harmoniously, we’re emotionally taken to the story from the editing and shot fluidity, which is then complemented with color grading.
Sound & Editor: Muhammad Idris
Muhammad Idris started his sound design carrier from his very first short film assignment during his first-year degree, Elevator Love (2017) with barely any knowledge about sound design and slowly grows his sound design skills from time to time through learning from all sources and practicing the knowledge through making short films with his fellow friends. In the meantime, he is also developing his editing skills through editing lyric videos and live performances of his songs that he did as part of his passion.
Production Designer: Beverly Leong
Beverly often finds herself tinkering with things as she believes the only way to truly figure out how things work is to be able to take them apart and put them back together again. With a strong interest in arts and literature, she is determined to immerse herself in as many forms of expression as possible. "Create the world you want to live in, even if it means doing it by hand."

The often overlooked and unknown stories of Borneo, especially the Orang Ulu community is waiting to be told.
We see film as the perfect medium to present the oral folklores of these people to a wider audience.
There is a lack of Sarawakian and Sabahan perspectives in the local film industry, and so it is difficult to track public interest in these types of films. But we believe that by being pioneers of a new wave of east Malaysian film scene is worth the risk.
