Project summary:
My solo “But would you know if a fishbowl is just a fishbowl?” was selected for International Solo Contemporary Dance Festival “Cuerpo al Descubierto” at Mexico City.
Budget breakdown:
Expenses not covered by the festival: RM4500 for return flight tickets (KL - Mexico City)
Other sponsorships: RM1000 (Short + Sweet KL)
Crowdfunding target: RM3500 for flight tickets
Why I need your support:
I am crowdfunding for this project because it is more difficult to get funding as a solo artist doing contemporary work (compared to traditional arts which usually has more support from the government and other organizations). Showcasing our traditional arts is important, and I have been in many international festivals and programmes doing that; but I think contemporary works have its own story to tell. I would really appreciate any help at all in bringing my work to Mexico, to an international solo contemporary dance festival. I would love to share my work with other international artistes and of course to carry the title of being a Malaysian, and also to gain exposure, experience and networking opportunities.
About my solo:
But would you know if a fishbowl is just a fishbowl?
A fish that has spent all its life in a fishbowl wouldn't know that the plants in the fishbowl are artificial, that the food being fed is freeze dried, the bubbles created are simulated.. That the whole world of the fish in that fishbowl, is actually JUST a fishbowl.
Perhaps we are all, in one way or another, a fish in a fishbowl. We cannot begin to know what we do not know. We cannot search for answers to which questions we do not think to ask.
And if we realize the world beyond the fishbowl, then what? It could be vast and incredible; or bleak and empty; or perhaps we wouldn't be able to survive at all.
And maybe we choose ignorance, we choose the fishbowl. Reality is taught; but we also choose our realities.
About me:
I am a full-time dance artist who performs, teaches and choreographs. I am a dancer at Ask Dance Company, a full-time dance company (www.askdancecompany.com) who specializes in providing training, workshops, master classes, performances, choreography as well as undertaking collaborative projects in traditional and contemporary genres of dance. Our company recently opened up a studio (Malaysian Dance Centre) at Ampang with hopes to bring dance education (especially traditional dances which are not widely taught and practiced). We also conduct community outreach programmes which are open and free to the public in an effort to increase the awareness and love for dance, as well as preserving our traditional arts.
I also do a lot of projects outside the company, such as productions, workshops and also collaborations with other artists (dancers, musicians, actors, visual artists, photographers, etc) because personally I am very interested in exploring the different possibilities of dance and am always excited to experience and learn something new. I believe that dance is for everyone, that dance should be inclusive and that if you enjoy yourself dancing, then you're doing it right. I believe that dance is liberating and empowering because every individual has a way of moving, an expression, unique to them.
Recent projects: People Without Seasons with Un Yamada Co. at KLPac and Sabah, Nyanyian Bumi at Dpac, SounDance 13 and 16, Metamorphosis International Residency 2018 in Lisbon, The iProject at Dpac, Urbanscapes Dancing in Place, Iskarnival Main-main festival
Upcoming projects: "In/Out" devised theatre at KLPac (January), Indonesia Choreography Laboratory "D-Lab" (February), Asia-Pacific Dance Festival in Hawaii (July)
If I don't manage to raise enough funds I will continue trying to save up enough for the flights. Any amount donated would be really appreciated.
