Fault Lines: The World Premiere
Playwright/Producer: Adriana Nordin Manan
Director: Ghafir Akbar
Cast: Putrina Rafie - Fatimah Abu Bakar - Xavier Reminick - Reza Zainal Abidin - Sabrina Hassan - Aloeng Silalahi - Catherine Leyow
"If home won't get you where you want to go, maybe it's time to say goodbye. For your own good."
Shereen and Ray, a niece and uncle, are former government scholars who settled down overseas upon graduation. They have made their home in New York City, charting their lives in a foreign land while also maintaining the ups and downs of a connection to home in Kuala Lumpur.
One summer, their lives take a turn away from the ordinary when their family members from Malaysia arrive for a visit. Shereen's mother Habsah, uncle Zul and aunt Juita come with their own hopes for the trip. Nobody leaves their baggage behind.
"Mak, where'd you like to go in the greatest city in the world?"
Fault Lines is a play that deals with topics of homeland, the freedom to be, family and the neverending pursuit of unconditional love.
A project ten years in the making, Fault Lines is the debut full-length play by Adriana Nordin Manan. Based on her own experiences living overseas during her formative years, the play tackles identity and belonging from a significant yet seldom heard from category of Malaysians: the diaspora, or overseas Malaysians.
Fault Lines is helmed by a multinational team of artists, each outstanding in their craft. Many in the team are former members of the Malaysian diaspora themselves, finding the story to resonate personally with their own experiences.
Workshopped during the course of the pandemic, Fault Lines has garnered accolades. In 2021, it was a semi-finalist in the International Scratchpad Series, a global competition organised by off-Broadway play development outfit, The Playwrights Realm.
All smiles during our development workshop in January 2022
Fault Lines is ready to meet an audience from 16 - 19 November 2023, at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre.
And we would appreciate your support, as a symbol of your belief in the story, and to defray the production costs incurred.
The RM30,000 we hope to raise will go towards:
1) Recording of the performance, for marketing and documentation purchases
2) Airfare and accommodation for one cast member, travelling from overseas
3) Costume rental
Thank you, and see you in November.
With two months to go to the show, we have assembled a team (both cast and crew) and put everything into motion. Guided by experienced advisors and with the wisdom of learning by doing and working as a team, we are confident that the production will go as scheduled, buoyed by our collective enthusiasm and experience in staging theatre productions.
