Orphans are children who are abandoned by their caretakers or parents, which makes them vulnerable to threats from the outside world. Orphanages are institutions which are built for the care and education of orphans and they rely on donations from external source to support the lives of the orphans. This makes it hard for them to learn about important survival skills as donations from external sources are normally only used for daily life expenses or educational purposes.
To live independently as we mature is a must and one of the most important skill one must have is to be able to cook for themselves. Most orphans that are fortunate enough to live in an orphanage lack the life skill to cook for themselves which would put them in a tight position once they have grown up as they would have to make their own money and eating out is very costly nowadays which makes it important for one to learn how to cook, especially an orphan. Seeing this as an opportunity, we have came up with the idea of hosting a cooking workshop for orphanage kids.
Here's our team!
We are a group of 5 students from Taylor’s University and we each have specific roles in getting this project done sucessfully.
Kong Yee Jin (Jack)
Jack is the team leader of the crowdfunding campaign and is in charge of making sure that all details of the events are thoroughly considered so to ensure the campaign runs smoothly and also handle some of the communications with the orphanage.
Kenny Kwan
He is in-charge of the video making and editing for the campaign as well as any photographic task.
Edward Ong
Edward assists Kenny in the final touches of video making and editing for the campaign. He also assists Jack in contacting the orphanage.
Lim Yoong Zu (Zurick)
Zurick is charged of engaging in conversations and enquiries, should there be any on our crowdfund page. Besides that, he is also in charge of designing/managing our crowdfund website.
Wong Zhin Yue
Zhin Yue is in charge of any purchasing of materials for the crowdfunding project. He ensures the materials and apparatus is suitable and ample for the project.
What is our Plan?
The five of us will be crowdfunding to support our cooking workshop for Shelter Home for Children. Shelter is a registered welfare organization that helps abused, abandoned, neglected or at-risk children. We chose Shelter as they are a registered welfare organisation and they were willing to accept our help to conduct a cooking workshop. The cooking workshop will teach the children from Shelter how to cook simple and inexpensive meals. We have classified different cooking activities to cater the different age groups in Shelter as shown below.
Age 5-9 : Learn to make jelly.
Age 10-15 : Learn to make fried rice.
As for the day of executing the plan, it will be around February or March 2018 as it will be a one-day cooking workshop. In that one day, we plan to get to know the children before conducting the workshop so we have included some activites to get to know them as shown in the timetable below.
9.00 a.m. -10.00 a.m. | Introduction of team to children in Shelter. |
10.00 a.m. - 11.00 p.m. | Fun activities with Children of Shelter. |
11.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m. | Cooking Workshop. |
1.00 p.m. - 2.00 p.m. | Lunch time. |
2.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m. | Cleaning and teaching children the food pyramid. |
4.00 p.m. | Leave Shelter. |
Why Do We Need RM500?
The targeted amount we wish to reach is RM500 and will be fully used to cover our expenses which includes our commute, raw ingredients and some necessary utensils for cooking as shown below. the costs of each parts are approximated so if there is any money left after conducting the workshop, the money will be given to Shelter.
Ingredients | RM150 |
Cooking Utensils and Tools | RM200 |
Transportation | RM50 |
Incentives | RM20 |
Upon deciding on our crowdfunding project, the value proposition of the cooking workshop for orphans would be giving the society a chance to change the lives of orphans by funding for a cooking workshop for orphans. We think that our value proposition is valid as we think that people would want to do good and give the orphans an opportunity to learn how to cook. From there, we decided on three core assumptions of our crowdfunding campaign, which are:
People wants to change the lives of orphans.
People think that it is important that orphans know and learn how to cook.
People would fund our campaign as a safer platform for funding to aid the orphans.
Some key challenges we might face are grouping the orphanage according to age, as some of them are too young to be handling the cooking utensils and ingredients, we have arranged younger kids to activities that are catered for their age group. Besides that, getting customers to put their trust and money on us to deliver the workshop will be a challenge too as we are just a group of unknown students. Other than that, this workshop is rather straight forward and is deem to succeed with the right amount of support from the public and effort by our team.
