This year, A DIALOGUE OF LACK/LOST - Emerging Theatre Artiste Exchange Project has been held once again, presenting Artiste Exchange Workshop & Theatre Performance.
In 2015, the purpose of initiating the project, A DIALOGUE OF LACK/LOST - Emerging Theatre Artiste Exchange Project is stepping out the first leap to overcome the dilemma faced by the Mandarin Theatre in Malaysia.
Firstly, in order to earn a living, young artistes are forced to engage in behind the scenes, thus, abandon one’s passion to pursue acting and creative art. Furthermore, despite knowing and working occasionally with each other, young artistes from different theatre group lack of opportunities in deep thought exchange. Hence, the strength of Mandarin Theatre has been unable to integrate effectively, to make a greater impact on society.
If the current situation persists, what then is the significance for us to engage in theatre? Are we moving towards the professional, or are we sailing backwards? Are we conscious of our involvement in this trend, or are we just drifting along mindlessly? What kind of era do we live in? What does the generation of emerging Mandarin Theatre artiste mean for?
Move on to cultivate and built the strength, A DIALOGUE OF LACK/LOST - Emerging Theatre Artiste Exchange Project has been held once again. In 2016, the workshop expands to others performing field instead of Mandarin Theatre, presenting A DIALOGUE OF LACK/LOST - Artiste Exchange Workshop. In the second stage of this project (Theatre Performance), Classic Plays will be performed independently as we continuously encourage dialogues in the present, carrying on the unfinished task.

A DIALOGUE OF LACK / LOST is to connect the desired & the lost.
Lack is a fundamental condition to life. The awareness to the presence of lack sparks our desire to explore into the unknown.
In the performing art, lack has created numerous schools of thought and creative styles. Our predecessors’ desire to explore the lack resulted in many creations of solid thoughts and works.
Loss, which exists in the past. The hustle of modern lifestyle and consumerism has bred a desire for everything to be straightforward and fast, even when it comes to pursuing knowledge.
We have lost the patience to do so. As a result, the accumulated spiritual assets in human civilization are gradually losing.
Dialogue is a two-way interaction. One needs to make use of predecessor’s knowledge to view our current situation in order to create proper dialogue.
Artiste Exchange Workshop
Body & Voice Training
In this workshop, participants will revisit the basics of performance – the body & voice. And all participants are kindly requested to create syllabus on performing skills by going through a mutual system in the workshop.
Thought Exchange
Topic discussion builds a platform for voice out the opinions on the theatre current situation or other existing issues. Participants must be able to state one’s observations and points of view in learning to see things in different perspective.
Living in Collective Life
We share our way of life with each another through labour in the workshop. By sharing responsibilities to the operation of living space, we see different ways of living. Art connects life. Art without life is mechanical.
Theatre Performance Classic Plays
… Classic is built on a paradox – on one hand it resists time. It does not change with time and hence disappears & perishes in time. This shows that the human civilisation outruns time again and again... On another hand, a classic having endured the erosion of time, has encapsulated thought & feeling which are different from us now. Reading a classic grants us the escape from reality, enabling us to feel the presence & charm in the other ‘time’. Precisely because classic resisted time, it is able to preserve human experiences and knowledge from a specific period in time.
- Yang Zhao, Taiwanese writer & literary critic.
In recent years, we can see the rise in restaging classic plays as a vehicle to communicate with present. These conversations are built upon the desire to introduce human experiences & knowledge gathered from times to times. A classic play which survived through generations must have its own unique lens, captured the essence of the human condition, one that’s everlasting and will stay relevant despite the ever changing circumstances of the world.
This year, two curators will continuously direct the classic plays, keeping on exploring the fundamental crux of the current chaos, reminding people to see through appearances, reflecting themselves on the connection with the current social issues.
